Masterclass with René Pape

The New York Vocal Arts Academy (NYVAA), in collaboration with Gotham Arts, is honored to host René Pape, one of the world's leading opera singers, in a public masterclass setting on Sunday, March 9, starting at 2:00 PM (meet and greet/wine reception), followed at 3:00 PM by a 2.5 hour masterclass in which five talented singers will have the opportunity to learn from this celebrated German artist.

Don't miss this opportunity to watch from behind the scenes and learn about the intricacies of opera singing, and observe one of the world's greatest artists as he passes his knowledge and decades of international experience down to the next generation of artists.

The masterclass will be moderated by Dr. Emilio Pons, internationally renowned tenor and founder of NYVAA. 

About the guest artist:


German bass René Pape is one of the leading singers of his generation, renowned for his powerful, resonant voice and commanding stage presence which have enchanted audiences worldwide. Born and raised in Germany, he quickly rose to international prominence, performing at all the leading opera houses and festivals in the world including the Berlin State Opera, his "home" theater since 1988, Milan's Teatro alla Scala, London's Royal Opera at Covent Garden, the Vienna State Opera, Ópera de Paris, the Salzburg Festival, and New York's Metropolitan Opera, where he is currently performing the role of Rocco in Beethoven's Fidelio. Pape’s repertoire spans a wide range of roles, from the refined characters in Mozart’s operas to the more dramatic parts in Wagner and Verdi, each rendered with exceptional technical mastery and emotional depth. His career, marked by numerous acclaimed performances and collaborations with leading conductors and directors, has solidified his reputation as a central figure in today's opera world.

Meet and greet wine reception: 2-3 PM.
Masterclass proper: 3-5:30 PM
Cost to attend:
Active participants: $90 (for a 30 minute block). A pianist is not provided and you are required to bring your own pianist.
General public/auditors: $35.
Students (with ID): $20.
Please note that this is a ticketed event and that absolutely no one will be allowed to attend without a ticket. Please observe as well that tickets are not transferable and not refundable.

The specific location of the event, which will take place in a penthouse in the Flatiron District of Manhattan, New York City, will be revealed upon submitting your payment.

Information for active participants:

The masterclass is ideally suited for baritones and basses.
Each active participant will have 30 minutes to work with Mr. Pape.
You can sing either opera arias, German Lieder, or concert (oratorio) repertoire.
You are expected to arrive fully prepared to sing (there is no place to warm up at the location) and required to bring your own pianist.
