French Vocal Literature Workshop

About the event:

The New York Vocal Arts Academy (NYVAA) is proud to announce its very first summer workshops, dedicated to vocal literature (art song and opera) in French, Russian, and German.

The French Vocal Literature workshop will be led by acclaimed French pianist Matthieu Cognet, and by Emilio Pons, internationally renowned tenor and founder of NYVAA.

The French Art Song and Opera Summer Workshop is an immersive program designed for pianists and singers eager to delve into the rich tapestry of French vocal music. Participants engage in intensive training, focusing on the nuances of French diction, interpretation, and performance techniques inherent to art song and opera. The workshop will be taught by two internationally renowned performers capable of offering offering invaluable insights into the stylistic and emotional depth of French repertoire. Additionally, participants will have the opportunity to perform in a public recital at the end of the workshop, which will enhance their stage presence and confidence.

Workshop structure:

Participation is limited to six participants (ideally: 3 singers, 3 pianists).
Preference will be given to candidates who apply as a singer/pianist duo.
During the first part of the day, each singer, and each pianist, will have a thirty-minute session with their respective teachers (singers will study vocal technique with Emilio Pons; pianists will study with Matthieu Cognet).
All participants are required to observe the lessons of their peers (singers must observe the lessons of other singers; pianists of other pianists).
During the second half of the day, the singer/pianist duos will be taught jointly by Matthieu Cognet and Emilio Pons for an hour per duo. These lessons must be observed by all participants.
On the final day of the workshop, there will be a recital featuring all participants that will be open to the public.

Tuition and board:

We welcome applications from young singers and pianists living both in NYC and beyond. Applicants who do not live in NYC are encouraged to apply to stay, at a discounted rate, at the seat of the workshop: The Brownstone–Haus der Musik, in NYC.

Tuition is $225 per day of activities per participant. Whereas the total number of days of activities is six (June 1-6, and June 8). the $1350.
Thanks to a donation from a generous donor who chose to remain anonymous, we offer partial scholarships based on a combination of merit and demonstrated financial need.
Board at The Brownstone-Haus der Musik is $80 (room with two twin size beds)-$110 (room with two queen-size beds) per day per participant on a shared, double-occupancy basis. These rates ($160/$220 per room) are being offered to participants of the workshop at a heavily discounted rate (normally: $220/$280). Participants from out of town who do not wish to share their room may book it entirely to themselves for $160 or $220, depending on the room of their choice. Given the exorbitant price of accommodation in NYC in other places, participants are encouraged to apply as soon as possible.
